On May 9, 2025, a pioneering outreach clinic was successfully conducted at the Vavunadevu Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office, marking a significant step in enhancing healthcare accessibility for rural communities in Sri Lanka. This initiative was led by Prof. Viji Thirukumar, a distinguished Professor in Paediatrics at the Faculty of Health Care Sciences, Eastern University, along with Dr. Janalakshan and Dr. Elanko, both esteemed medical professionals committed to community health.
The clinic’s multifaceted approach aimed to address prevalent health concerns among the local population. Key services provided included comprehensive growth monitoring for children, enabling early identification of growth faltering and timely interventions. Additionally, staff training sessions were conducted to enhance the early detection of growth issues, ensuring sustained community health improvements. Nutritional counseling was another cornerstone of the clinic, focusing on utilizing locally available resources to promote balanced diets and combat malnutrition. Guidance on the timely initiation of weaning practices was also offered, aligning with national health recommendations to support optimal infant development.
